The NIF number can be assigned to individuals, to companies or foundations. It is a tax identification number assigned to the before mentioned ones by the Spanish Tax Office, called AEAT.
This number is necessary if the company will own assets in Spain (whether properties or shares) or will be appointed Director of a Spanish company.
If its director is a person, he or she will also need to obtain a NIF number, which is the activation of the NIE number in the Tax Office.
To apply for this NIF number for your foreign entity you will need to show an updated Mercantile Registry certificate or its equivalent in your country, duly apostilled and translated into Spanish by a sworn translator. Such certificate needs to state that the entity is still active, its Tax id number or company number, its fiscal address and its current Director.
